Those with an interest in the solar system or who are visiting with young ones who are fascinated by space have much to enjoy at the Sri Lanka Planetarium; here’s a glimpse of what it has to offer.
Planning Your Visit
This well-known attraction can be found in an area of the University of Colombo in the nation’s commercial capital, within easy reach of properties like Cinnamon Grand Colombo. It’s also close to landmarks such as the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). While it’s open from 8:30am to 4:00pm from Tuesday to Saturday, the special presentations for the public are only on Saturdays (more information below). The site is closed from Sunday to Monday and on public holidays.
A Bit of History
Before heading here from one of the nearby Colombo hotels, it helps to know a bit more about the Sri Lanka Planetarium. It was launched on 1st February 1965 and was established by the State Engineering Corporation as part of the Ceylon Industrial Exhibition. Its distinctive lotus blossom-like design is credited to the State Engineering Corporation’s chief engineer at the time, Dr. A. N. S. Kulasinghe. As part of its renovation, a Digital Power Dome Projector was installed in 2014 which has become a key attraction.
What to Expect
Inquisitive young minds will get a chance to learn more about the wonders of space, especially via the planetarium’s special projector. This digital full dome projector showcases various films (subjects vary from time to time) to the public (only on Saturdays) that uncover the mysteries of the galaxy be it the birth of the solar system or the dawn of the space age and much more. The site also hosts various workshops, activities, and science exhibitions, while the outdoor Science Activity Park offers more fun as well.
Keep in Mind

Remember that public dome presentations only take place on Saturdays at 10:00am and 2:00pm with each show running for around 90 minutes; school shows generally take place from Tuesday to Friday. While 500 seats are available, one is advised to get there at least 30 minutes before the show commences; ensure you call ahead and check the official site for updates on times and more information including the language of the shows (http://www.planetarium.gov.lk/planetarium-presentations/).
