Located only a short distance from Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is characterized by rows of painted fishing boats dotting the canals and a lining of mangroves separating lagoon and sea. As one of the biggest fishing cities in the country, the area boasts a bustling fishing market (the Lellama) where fishmongers showcase traditional methods of fishing and trade.
History
The city of Negombo embodies an old-world charm, with remnants of its rich and multicultural history preserved in its architecture and way of life, particularly with the art of fishing. A favorite port among colonials during their time in Sri Lanka, crab, clam, and other varieties of seafood cemented the fishing village as a staple in the country.
Seafood and Cuisine
Today, visitors can observe the day’s catch being freshly cleaned, prepped, and sold right in the open, surrounded by an aroma of the best from the sea (including clam, a Lagoon specialty). Get a taste at any restaurant or hotel, or even straight from the market at a much lower cost.
Navigation
Navigating the village is an activity in and of itself; cycling tours, paddling excursions at sunset, and boat rides are all options available for exploring the area. Negombo is also only a ride from the airport, as well as a 40-minute journey by highway from Colombo.
Water Exploration

Venturing further into the ocean, experience the opportunity to join the fishermen with deep sea fishing excursions and even clam harvesting in the mangroves with packages offered by several tour companies. At the convenience of visitors, several accommodation options are also available around the Lagoon. The Amagi Aria is within walking distance of several activity sites and offers the perks of a Negombo Lagoon hotel, including rooms overlooking the water.
