While Angkor Wat is the crown jewel of Siem Reap, there are many other fascinating temples and ruins waiting to be explored in and around this city. Here’s more on some of these lesser-known sites which offer plenty to discover, away from the crowds.
Banteay Srei
Dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva, Banteay Srei is a hidden gem located outside the Angkor Wat complex. Easy to reach on excursions from properties like FCC Angkor by Avani, this 10th-century temple features distinctive pink sandstone, delicate bas-reliefs and intricate carvings. Don’t miss the chance to explore the well-preserved structures here and be transported back in time.

Koh Ker
Koh Ker, a former capital of the Khmer Empire, is a remote site that combines perfectly with sightseeing adventures at Siem Reap attractions. Ideal for a day trip, this ancient attraction offers an immersive experience best enjoyed with a knowledgeable guide. Highlights include the overgrown ruins of Prasat Thom, a large temple complex designed as a seven-tiered pyramid.
Beng Mealea
While Beng Mealea was built in the same style as Angkor Wat, it actually predates the more famous structure. Enjoy an adventurous experience as you wander through the ruins with some structures covered in vegetation, while trees can also be seen growing out of the remnants of towers. Bring your camera to capture stunning photos of this “lost temple” amidst the jungle.
Sambor Prei Kuk
One of the oldest temples to be found around Siem Reap, Sambor Prei Kuk dates to the 7th century and features one of the earliest examples of large bas-reliefs. This complex is also known for its striking brick prasats or towers, some with well-preserved carvings. The most impressive structure is Prasat Chrey, a small tower completely overgrown by a tree adding to the site’s mystique.
