Those heading to Wuxi in China will be spoilt for choice when it comes to sightseeing, though there’s one attraction that should definitely be on your itinerary; here’s more on the magnificent Lingshan Grand Buddha and what awaits those exploring this site that draws visitors every day from near and far.
Planning Your Visit
This noteworthy attraction can be found along Lingshan Road on Taihu Lake’s northern bank, around an hour’s drive from the city. It’s best to be based at centrally located properties like Grand Park Wuxi of Park Hotel Group, from which you can easily plan an excursion. Apart from taking a taxi or using a private vehicle, you can also reach the Lingshan Scenic Area via bus lines 88 or 89.
Making the Ascent
To reach the statue, you will have to make an ascent along a staircase with 216 steps, which have been divided across seven terraces. As you make your way up, one of the most memorable things to do in Wuxi, you will come across enthralling carvings of stone as well. Interestingly, the steps leading upward are symbolic of transcending afflictions and fulfilling aspirations on a journey to spiritual enlightenment.
A Stunning Structure
Once you reach the top, be prepared to stand in sheer awe at the sight of one of the tallest bronze Shakyamuni Buddha statues in the world. The Lingshan Grand Buddha towers to a height of 88 metres, which includes a 9-metre-high lotus flower pedestal. Set amidst verdant hills and views of Taihu Lake, it provides a magical moment, so put your camera or phone aside for a while and just soak it all in.
There’s More to See

At the Lingshan Scenic Area, there are plenty more attractions in Wuxi to discover. Look to visit the Brahma Palace, which features distinctive architecture, murals and woodcarving and don’t miss the “Ode to Auspice” performances held here too. Also of note are the musical fountain showcasing the birth of Sakyamuni, the Flying Dragon Tower and the Buddha’s Hand Square, each with its own unique allure.
