The teardrop-shaped island of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, while small in size, is home to a shocking 26 national parks. So, no matter the trip, your time in the little island country wouldn’t be complete without experiencing its lush nature parks — a haven for fascinating wildlife. Come, explore!
1. Yala National Park – The Leopard Kingdom
The crown jewel of Sri Lankan national parks, Yala is the most visited national park in the island nation. While the sprawling nature park is home to elephants, crocodiles, abundant birdlife and various other species of animals, it is best known for its significant leopard population — supposedly the highest density in the world. Outside the national park, travellers can explore ancient Buddhist ruins at Magul Maha Viharaya Temple and centuries-old rock paintings at Sithulpawwa Buddhist monastery, adding to the wildlife experiences.
2. Udawalawe National Park – Land of the Gentle Giants
If you’re looking to spot wild elephants in Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is a must-visit. While several parks in the country are home to wild elephants, Udawalawe stands out as one of the few places where sightings are almost guaranteed during every safari. In addition to the hundreds of free-roaming elephants, visitors can also encounter water buffaloes, spotted deer, jackals, and stunning raptors.
3. Kumana National Park – A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Nestled away in the eastern part of the island, Kumana is one for all the bird lovers. The sprawling national park is one of the most notable when considering a Sri Lanka wildlife safari, and is one of the most popular nature destinations recommended by tour operators such as Walkers Tours. The most prominent among its rich birdlife are pelicans, painted storks, and spoonbills, while hundreds of other species also flock to its marshes and lagoons. Besides birds, visitors may also spot elephants, jackals, and occasionally leopards.
4. Wilpattu National Park – A Wilderness of “Willus”
Wilpattu National Park, nestled in the northwestern part of the island, basks in the glory of being the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. The nature park gets its name from its “willus”, the numerous natural lakes scattered throughout the reserve. Considering wildlife sightings, Wilpattu is best known for leopards, with frequent sightings of the big black-spotted cat around the willus. In addition, sloth bears, sambur deer, mugger crocodiles, and a wealth of birdlife are also among the wildlife species spotted at Wilpattu.

5. Minneriya National Park – Home to the Great Elephant Gathering
For those travellers visiting between June and October, Minneriya makes for an unmissable experience, as the national park hosts the world-famous “Gathering” — one of the largest annual assemblies of Asian elephants. With nearly 200 to 300 elephants congregating around the park’s massive body of water, the Minneriya Tank, everyone visiting Minneriya is sure to have their minds blown away. Avid Instagrammers, this is certainly a sight you don’t want to miss. Beyond the elephants, the park’s open grasslands and surrounding forest also attract deer, langurs, and a variety of bird species, making each safari drive varied and rewarding even outside the main gathering areas.
