There’s a tremendous amount to experience when it comes to the more historic and cultural side of Jaffna. One such place that is an essential visit is Nallur Kandaswami Kovil, or the Nallur Kovil for short. At first glance it is bound to be a very striking locale that is vibrant and colourful. This design is a hallmark of Hindu temples. The main kovil itself is massive, and has a glistening golden demeanour, whose surface is saturated with depictions of Hindhu gods and deities.
The temple is one of the most significant kovils in Sri Lanka, and attracts devotees from outside of Sri Lanka as well. It is believed the temple existed in some form even before the 1st century AD, but the first real construction took place during the 13th century. The temple has since undergone many developments to become the striking edifice it is today with the most recent ones being done in 2015.
The best time to visit this temple is during the annual festival, which is celebrated over the course of twenty five days. Various ceremonies and celebrations are scattered over the course of these twenty-five days to create a unique and unforgettable experience.
Even on days without festivals taking place, this kovil is definitely a sight to behold and an essential place to visit on any adventure to Jaffna or Sri Lanka in general.
