It was during the Tang Dynasty that Buddhism gained vast popularity in China, and the Green Dragon Temple played a pivotal role during this era. Many monks came to Xian during this time to study and learn Buddhism at the Green Dragon Temple. In 1086 the temple did go through some destruction but in 1963, the remains were resurrected.
Today, what remains of the temple are simple shrines and pagodas that are highlighted by beautiful cherry blossom trees that come to bloom in Spring. All built according to the Tang architectural style, the Green Dragon Temple is an excellent site that is rich in history and calming to the senses.
