Ban Kham Thieng is a 200 year old teak house that was brought in all the way from Chiang Mai and reconstructed in the city of Bangkok, piece by piece, keeping the same classical style of architecture. Built completely out of wood, it follows the Lanna-style, one that is very popular in Northern Thailand and distinct to that region and reached its height between the 13th to 18th century. An interesting fact about houses built in this manner is that they can be taken apart and reassembled in any place you want, therefore ensuring that your house is always with you.
Protected by the Siam society under the Royal patronage, Ban Kham Thieng is actually located within the Siam Society grounds Sukhumvit Road. Once a home of worker, it showcases the simplicity of rural life. This ancestral home was donated by a certain Mr.Kraisri’s mother. Built in sometime during the early 19th century, it’s not only the house but also the many artifacts and old equipment which came with it, that add more value to this site.
From intricately hand woven material to exquisite ornate wooden carvings, musical instruments that must have entertained guests and household members alike as well as sacred items used for various rituals, the house is completely stocked. Under the house is another treasure trove, filled with fish traps, ploughing and rice harvesting gear, and other things used in day-to-day activities. Most of them were made of bamboo or reed, showcasing the eco-friendly lifestyle that was lead.
