Part of Seoul’s cultural scene, Namsangol Hanok Village is a well-preserved historical village featuring hanoks, which are old-style Korean wooden houses. Visitors are treated to a selection of architectural gems and offered the opportunity to discover the country’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a place that keeps tradition, history, and culture alive.
History
As far as history goes, Namsangol Hanok Village isn’t old. In fact, it was established in 1998 to recreate a traditional village from the Joseon Dynasty. The goal is to preserve the architecture and customs of that era. Although the village was artificially created, five hanoks were moved to the village from different parts of the city to give it a touch of authenticity.
Getting There
The village has a central location, providing easy access from anywhere in the city. Chungmuro Station, the nearest subway station, is only a short walk from the village. You’ll find several Namsan hotels in the area, providing convenient access to the village. From Travelodge Myeongdong Namsan, for instance, the village is an easy walk.
Ticket Prices and Visiting Hours
Namsangol Hanok Village doesn’t charge an entrance fee. It’s free for all, open from 9 AM to 9 PM from March to October, with the hours shortened to 8 PM from November to February. The village is closed on Mondays.
