Once the site of a grand royal palace, now the Eighth Wonder of the World, Sri Lanka’s Sigiriya Rock Fortress offers an adventure like no other. Here are a few tips and facts to help you prepare for the grand climb up this stunning rock fortress.

Timing is Everything
Sigiriya is open from around 7 am to 5.30 pm daily, giving you ample time during the day for a visit. But the Rock Fortress is best experienced early in the morning – the sight of the rising sun from the rock’s summit is worth sacrificing a few extra hours of sleep for!
Reaching the Fortress
There are several ways to reach Sigiriya, especially if you’re beginning from Colombo. Travelling by car, van, train or bus is possible. However, all public buses stop at Dambulla while the closest train station is in Habarana. A tuk-tuk ride or another bus from these locations will get you to the fortress. If you’re already staying at hotels like Sigiriya Jungles Sri Lanka, then transport will be arranged from the hotel.
The Grand Climb
The duration of the climb will depend on what time you visit and your fitness level, but it can range from 40 to 90 minutes for the ascent alone. The climb itself is only moderately challenging and suitable for anyone, as long as weak knees are not the bane of your existence!
Captivating Sights
Why is climbing the fortress one of the best things to do in Sigiriya? That’s because you’ll get a glimpse of a royal bygone era through various captivating sights along your climb:
- The Water Gardens and Boulder Gardens at the base of the rock
- Intricate frescoes painted on the walls of the rock
- The Mirror Wall where it is said that the King could admire his reflection
- The Lion Gate – a grand stairway flanked by two giant lion paws made of stone
- The palace gardens at the summit – a key feature of the king’s royal residence
