So, first things first: yes, the Dubai Mall is impressive, and no, you shouldn’t skip it. That said, remember that Downtown Dubai has much more on offer waiting just beyond the shopfronts, from sights that soar to the clouds to performances that will stir your heart!
Burj Khalifa
Towering to a height of 828 metres, the Burj Khalifa is impossible to miss… after all, it’s the tallest building on planet earth! After the obligatory selfies outside this site, close to hotels like DAMAC Maison Mall Street, head up to the observation decks. Choose the two-level At the Top on the 124th and 125th floors or splurge on the sky-high view from the 148th floor. Pro tips: look to catch a sunset from here, and remember you can pre-book tickets to skip the queues.
The Dubai Fountain
Right at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain puts on a show like no other. Jets of water ascend up to 150 metres, choreographed to music and glowing under around 6,600 lights. Shows run every 30 minutes daily and are especially enchanting after dark. The great thing is that when you stay at a hotel near Dubai Mall, you can always catch this spellbinding sight lighting up the night.
Souk Al Bahar
While Dubai Mall grabs the headlines, Souk Al Bahar offers some great retail therapy, too. This modern souk blends Arabian-style architecture with some laidback shopping and dining. Wander stone-lined corridors, browse handicrafts, jewellery, carpets and perfumes and then settle into a café or restaurant overlooking the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain. It’s a great place to get a perspective of just how atmospheric this locale really is.

Dubai Opera
Dubai Opera adds what can be called a cultural heartbeat to the downtown area. Shaped like a traditional dhow, this striking venue hosts everything from ballet and opera to concerts, theatre and even stand-up comedy. With space for 2,000 guests, there’s always something happening. Check the official schedule in advance and book early; of course, you can always join a guided tour, too.
