Sri Lanka is blessed with a beautiful coast line that runs like a beautifully woven border around the island. Having said that the island is blessed with some great Marine life. There are some organisations that have come forward to protect these priceless treasures.
Having many touristy beaches on the Southern belt of Sri Lanka its no surprise that there are many hotels in the south of Sri Lanka. If one wants to escape the hustle and bustle and the touristy feel a quieter option would be Kalutara beach hotel. Not far from this town , as you approach the South of Sri Lanka you will find another Sea Side town Kosgoda. Where one of Sri Lanka’s largest sea turtle conservation projects take place. The turtle hatchery program is aimed at preserving the eggs and increasing the rate of hatchlings as if left in natural conditions the chances of the eggs being hatched is minimal, due to animals feeding on them , people selling them illegally and other such reasons.
Once a turtle lays its eggs on the shore it never comes back to look for its young. What the conservation project does is collect the eggs from the coast and bring it to their hatchery, they also pay a price to fishermen for bringing these eggs to them.
They then bury it in suitable conditions and as they hatch the young turtles are kept in there care for three days and then released into the sea. However, the disabled turtles and rescued turtles are kept at the hatchery permanently.
The hatchery runs on no government funds, mostly through ticket sales and donations.
