Sri Lanka is one of the countries that should top the list of countries to visit for any tourist. Just 45 minutes away from the city of Colombo, towards the south area, is the district of Kaluthara, where a different experience altogether awaits you. There are many ancient buildings as well as beach resorts such as the Taprobana and others to be found in this area.
As you drive deeper into this district you will encounter the Pahiyangala caves. They are located in a very secluded village named Yatagampitiya, and are known to be Asia’s biggest rocks that have been formed naturally. Research goes on to explain that 37,000 years ago, ancient cavemen used to occupy these caves. The massive space vacant within the caves makes it possible for a crowd of more than 2800 to gather at the same time. The cave surpasses 195ft in length and 170ft in height. It is more than 370ft above sea level. The tunnels that can be found inside are naturally formed. Entrances to these tunnels are obstructed at present.
It was found that the caves were initially maintained by a Chinese monk. Several years later the management was taken over by Ven. Porogama, a Sri Lankan Buddhist priest. A gallery is to be built in the near future in order to store some of the relics and prevent further decay. Wandering around the caves can be a very peaceful experience.
