Location
The Heroines Monument can be found on Tha Rua Junction on Thepkasattri Road in Thailand on the traffic roundabout. The monument is approximately 12 km from Phuket City. If you want to get close to the monument, you should try crossing after rush hour!
Early life of the Heroines
Chan and Mook were sisters born to the head of the Baan Kien Village family. Chan was a two-time widow and it was at the death of her second husband when the Burmese troops invaded Thailand. She, together with her sister rallied up the locals to fight the invaders.
The legend
Over two centuries ago, Chan and Mook led an army of locals, many who were women, to fight against the Burmese invaders and eventually won the battle. After the war, they helped the locals to rebuild their lives; this was at a time when women were only expected to be childrearers.
Post war
To honour the sisters, King Rama 1 bestowed the titles of Thao Sri Sunthorn and Thao Thepkasattri to Chan and Moon. After the heroines passed away, a monument was erected in 1967 to honour these two with the brave sisters.
Visiting
If you’re visiting the town in March, and are staying at Kata Rocks or other similar Phuket luxury villas in Thailand, the Thao Thepkasattri-Thao Sri Suntorn Festival, an annual event should not be missed!
