Richmond Castle, located in the town of Kalutara, Sri Lanka, is a captivating historical estate that offers a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. The History
Richmond Castle, an architectural marvel built at the turn of the 20th century in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, was originally the residence of Padikara Mudali Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a wealthy landowner and philanthropist. Situated on a 42-acre estate atop a hill, the castle was once used as a circuit bungalow for British officers.
The Architecture
The mansion, renowned for its grandeur, features a two-storey design with 99 doors and 34 windows adorned with exquisite glass panes depicting grapevines. Its construction involved two shiploads of teak imported from Burma and is noted for its intricate wood carvings and a dancing hall with a stage. The building exhibits a unique blend of Victorian and Moorish architectural styles, with timber and craftsmanship that have been well-preserved.
The Legacy
In 1947, Mudaliyar Siriwardena bequeathed the castle to the Public Trustee for the welfare of Sri Lankan children. The mansion, once a symbol of opulence, is now a day-care center and educational facility. The estate includes a museum and showcases old photographs and artifacts. Despite some damage and vandalism over the years, Richmond Castle remains a testament to Siriwardena’s contributions and philanthropy.
The Grounds
Originally surrounded by lush flower gardens, the estate now includes various fruit trees such as coconut, mangosteen, and guava. Although the gardens have changed, marble statues from the original design remain. The Mudaliyar, a nature lover, had initially maintained a vibrant garden which reflected his personal aesthetic and wealth.
