A Buddhist site that attracts anyone who visits the city of Kalutara and a site that’s as old as the history of Sri Lanka, Kalutara Bodhiya is a must-visit sacred attraction in the country.

Kalutara, Sri Lanka
Located about 60km away from Colombo, Kalutara, today, is a tourist destination. Many great hotels in Kalutara the likes of Turyaa Kalutara Hotel match global standards and they are all ideal for coastal getaways.
The Kalutara Temple
It’s one of the very few hollow temples in Sri Lanka. This stupa is the first thing that anyone would see when they are entering the city, and it also has a very interesting tale of history.
It’s an ancient tree
This sacred Bo tree has been there since the 02nd century BC. That says, even when the British, Dutch and Portuguese were ruling the country, this Bo tree has been here in Kalutara sharing blessings with all the citizens.
How the locals respect this sacred tree
Even when people who get to pass Kalutara Bodhiya, have no time to visit the Stupa or the Bodhiya premises, they still stop their vehicles and do some donations (mostly coins) to the tills located outside.
