Kandy was the last kingdom of Sri Lanka. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinhe was the last ruler of the country – who was imprisoned by the British until his death; following their invasion of the city. He reigned from 1798 until 1815.

Iconic temple

Sri Dalada Maligawa, or more commonly known by tourists as the Sacred Temple of the Tooth is located inside the royal complex and houses the revered relic of Buddha’s tooth. The temple has been marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
