Better known as MOT, the institution was established in 1995 to celebrate the beauty of modern art and create interest in art among people after the Second World War. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo holds a permanent collection of more than 4000 stunning pieces of art. Even though these have their own significance, the temporary exhibitions held are a sight to behold. MOT successfully brings together some of their own pieces and those of invited guest artists from around the world to put together a stunning collection a few times a year. Categorized by their different genres and sometimes periods, these exhibitions are the main cause of attraction for tourists. Being the largest contemporary art museum in the city the authorities of MOT are bent on improving its collection by number as well as by quality. Each year more than 300 pieces after the year of 1950 are added to the collection. In 2011 it acquired a collection of 396 paintings and sculptures from the post war era; including a feature by Anish Kapoor, the sculptor who designed the commemorative tower for the 2012 London Olympics, a body of early work by Yoshitomo Nara, work by the sculptor Yutaka Sone, unique landscape paintings by Nobuya Hitsuda and work by Mami Kosemura, a spirited video artist.
The museum also conducts guided tours by its staff but these are available only in Japanese. MOT also has special programmes available for schools and educational institutions willing to include MOT in their study programmes. Lectures, tours and loans of study materials such as DVDs and slides are available. Workshops are held at the museum for those wishing to improve their skills and the museum library with over 100,000 volumes is more than willing to assist you in your every art requirement. Materials are available in English as well as Japanese.
