The Sigiriya Rock Fortress in Sri Lanka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in ancient secrets and legend. Built in the 5th century BC by the infamous King Kashyapa, here are some of Sigiriya’s best legends and secrets.
A King’s Ambition
Sigiriya was built as a stronghold to protect King Kashyapa, the illegitimate son of King Dhatusena, who, it’s said, murdered his father by immuring him in a brick wall. He then became king after overthrowing his brother, Prince Muggalan, the rightful heir. Fearing reprisal from Muggalan, Kashyapa built the fortress on a monolithic rock in the centre of the Sigiriya forest. There he lived protected in glory and power, but also in fear of being overthrown by his brother.
A Marvellous Fort and World Wonder
Sigiriya, meaning lion rock in Sinhala, has astounded modern architects for its intelligent architecture, from intricate plumbing networks to sky gardens and pools on the rock summit. Hence, the Rock Fortress is unofficially regarded as the world’s 8th wonder, making it a huge tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Today, it is not only surrounded by dense forests and charming villages, but also some of the best resorts in Sigiriya, with the popular ones similar to Sigiriya Jungles Sri Lanka, overlooking the iconic fortress.
Discover World-Famous Frescoes

The Sigiriya frescoes of beautiful damsels highlight the talents of artisans from the past. Depicted on a rock wall that’s a part of an inner chamber of the fort, the damsels dazzle with ethereal smiles. A King Silenced By Paranoia
Although Kashyapa lived a semi-happy life, in constant fear of his brother, in 495 BC, Moggalan indeed did return with an army. So, on the brink of defeat, Kashyapa rode his elephant to the battlefield and chose to end his life with his sword. What remains today is a legacy of architectural ingenuity, and a crucial piece of Sri Lanka’s ancient history.
