While there are plenty of popular temples in Bangkok, not all of them are well-known to tourists. Each of these hidden gems has its own unique history, architecture, and cultural significance and here are a few that you shouldn’t miss.

Wat Prayoon
Also known as Wat Rua Lek, Wat Prayoon is a charming temple located on the western side of the Chao Phraya River, easy to reach from properties like Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok. Built when King Rama III ruled, this site features a section with a striking red iron fence fashioned from ancient weapons. Other highlights include an impressive bell-shaped chedi (pagoda), “Turtle Mountain” home to spirit houses, a museum showcasing Buddha images and artefacts and a pond with turtles that you can feed!
Wat Kalayanamit
Often overshadowed by the nearby Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Wat Kalayanamit is a beautiful and peaceful temple that is also worth visiting from a Bangkok city view hotel located in the Riverside area. This historic temple, founded in 1825, has a magnificent 16-metre-high golden seated Buddha within its main building that is not to be missed. On your visit, you can also admire the intricate murals depicting the life of the Buddha and marvel at the largest bell in Thailand.
Wat Ratchabophit
Wat Ratchabophit is another stunning Bangkok temple that showcases a unique blend of Thai and European architectural styles. You will find temple buildings that are adorned with hand-painted glazed ceramics as well as interiors which resemble a Gothic cathedral. Other highlights include the ordination hall and prayer hall with Thai-style exteriors, a gilded Buddha image in the meditation posture, a chedi that contains relics of Lord Buddha and a royal cemetery
Wat Suwannaram
A lesser-known temple in Thonburi, Wat Suwannaram offers a serene atmosphere for a memorable visitor experience. Built during the Ayutthaya period when King Taksin reigned, this sacred site at one time served as the royal cremation ground as well. Amongst its key features are the striking 19th-century murals that depict the life of Lord Buddha. As you explore this site, also take in the sight of the prayer hall and a noteworthy Buddha image dating to the Sukhothai period.
