A popular Siam Reap excursion is the Ta Prohm, a Cambodian temple that was built in the 13th century. Ta Prohm has been left under the care of nature which deeply rooted its influence between the shivering towers and stone walls. UNESCO had marked Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List of 1992 and the growth of trees from the ruins of the temple has made it one of the most visited temples in Angkor. Visitors looking for accommodation in the heart of the Cambodian city, have a variety of hotels and resorts to choose from, including Anantara Angkor Resort, which are in close proximity to the wonderful ruins of Ta Prohm.
The Buddhist temple is known to be one of the oldest temples which still contained a stone inscription providing details of the temple and its inhabitants. It has been stated that around 80,000 people maintained the temple.
The temple is surrounded by Fig, Banyan and Kapok trees; known to be over a hundred years old, which have entwined its roots and branches over the walls and terraces of the temple. The natural wild charm of the temple and its surroundings are what draws people from all around the world to explore through, as most of the remaining towers are held together by tree trunks. The temple compound once held 260 statues of Gods, 39 towers and contained 566 groups of dwellings. Many of the corridors that surround the complex are now impassable as they are covered in trees, shrubs and other marks of nature.
One of the most magnificent natural ruins is the formation of the roots on the eastern gopura, known as the Crocodile Tree.Tomb Raider fans will also remember a particular scene that was shot here with Angelina Jolie!
The best time to visit the ruins of Ta Prohm is in the morning, as the air is cool and the breeze makes it easy to explore through nature’s strict hold on the temple.
