Surrounded by the still waters of a mist-cloaked lake, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is Kandy’s spiritual masterpiece. As one of Sri Lanka’s most recognisable destinations, discover the stories and grandeur of Sri Dalada Maligawa, with a guide to the religious heart of Kandy.

History Shrouded in Folklore
The temple’s infamy is rooted in its incredible religious, and historical significance.
In 543 BCE, right from the ashes of the funeral pyre, a princess smuggled one of Lord Buddha’s teeth to Kandy. The tooth became a symbol of regal authority, and was safeguarded across numerous locations to avoid invaders. It was carefully moved into the Dalada Maligawa around the 17th century, and today, sits protected in a grand chamber.
When to Visit
Located in the heart of the city, just a short distance from the best places to stay in Kandy, the temple is a year-round attraction, open daily from 5.30 am to 8 pm. However, the best time to visit Kandy is from July to August, during perahara season.
Sri Lanka’s largest Buddhist parade, the esala perahara, colours the streets with lights, fire dances, and elaborate costumes, centring around the Dalada Maligawa. As a must-see event during your time in Sri Lanka, be sure to book a stay at a nearby hotel like Earl’s Regency in advance.
Unique Architecture
The temple itself is an architectural masterpiece, adorned in a range of styles that embody the heritage of Kandy. Featuring a blend of Kandyan, South Indian, and colonial influences, the temple’s golden canopy, white stone walls, and frescoes come together to tell the stories of Sri Lanka’s 3000-year-old history.
Attractions in the Area
Beyond the temple, the city is packed with things to do and see. Witness a traditional Kandyan dance by the lake, or head to the museum for a further dive into the city’s illustrious past. The surrounding region is also home to stunning natural landscapes, best explored through the Udawattakele Forest Reserve and the Royal Botanical Gardens.
