History Shrouded in Folklore
The temple’s infamy is rooted in its incredible religious, and historical significance.
In 543 BCE, right from the ashes of the funeral pyre, a princess smuggled one of Lord Buddha’s teeth to Kandy. The tooth became a symbol of regal authority, and was safeguarded across numerous locations to avoid invaders. It was carefully moved into the Dalada Maligawa around the 17th century, and today, sits protected in a grand chamber.
When to Visit
Located in the heart of the city, just a short distance from the best places to stay in Kandy, the temple is a year-round attraction, open daily from 5.30 am to 8 pm. However, the best time to visit Kandy is from July to August, during perahara season.
