Surrounded by hills and fresh green trees, Gregory Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Nuwara Eliya. Draped in mist, the sight of the lake is even more magical in the morning. Drawn by its serenity and beauty, both locals and tourists visit to sit and relax, or cycle around the lake in the hope of getting a bit of exercise.
Origins
Gregory Lake was built in 1873 when the British were here, and it was named after Sir William Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon. The goal behind building the lake was to improve farming and provide water to the town. Over time, it became a popular spot for boating and quiet walks.
Present Day
Today, Gregory Lake has become one of the most popular attractions in Nuwara Eliya. It retains much of its old charm, though, with the misty mountains surrounding it and the invigorating cool air lifting your spirits. The lake’s popularity has also given rise to several hotels in the area. For instance, Heritance Tea Factory is a little more than 30 minutes from Gregory Lake.
Things to Do
Besides walking, relaxing, and cycling, you can go horse riding and boating at Gregory Lake. Food shacks around the area sell delicious street food, so stop by for a snack in between happy jaunts. It’s also a great place to take photos.

Best Time to Go
Early morning is best, when mist floats over the water and the air is crisp. Visit between February and April for clear skies and the famous Nuwara Eliya flower season.
