With history, adventure, and natural beauty, Nizwa promises a diversity of experiences. If you’re planning a trip to Oman, Nizwa is a must-see. In just two to three days, you can walk through ancient castles, explore the desert, visit peaceful mosques, and discover caves and deserts. Here’s how to make the most of your time in Nizwa.
Castles and Forts
Even if you’re short on time, you must make it a point to visit Nizwa Fort, one of the most famous forts in Oman. Make your way to the top of the fort for a stunning view of the surrounding area. Step inside to see a collection of old armaments and beautifully preserved rooms.
Next, head to Jabreen Castle. For a magical experience, visit at night when it lights up. Take a walk through its winding halls and appreciate the intricate ceilings.
Mosques
Located in Nizwa, the Sultan Qaboos Mosque is one of Oman top attractions. Built with white marble and surrounded by large gardens, the mosque is elegant and serene. Non-Muslim visitors are allowed at the mosque during non-prayer times.
While you’re planning your itinerary in Nizwa, think about where you want to stay, too. The town is home to tourist accommodations like Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar.
Al Hoota Caves
A short drive from Nizwa will take you to Al Hoota Caves. These natural caves are millions of years old. You’ll walk through long tunnels, see rock formations, and might even spot some fish in the underground lake.
Desert Adventure

No visit to Nizwa is complete without a trip to the desert. You can drive out to Wahiba Sands or a nearby desert area for a camel ride and sandboarding. If you visit in the evening, you’ll be able to marvel at a beautiful sunset.
