South and West Coasts
The peak season for the south and west coasts is from December to April when the weather is sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 32°C. This is the perfect time to plan a holiday here with local travel experts like Walkers Tours. You can relax on the stunning beaches, indulge in water sports, and explore historical sites like the Dutch Fort in Galle. It’s also the ideal time for whale watching in Mirissa, where you can spot these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
The Hill Country
If you prefer cooler temperatures, lush greenery and getaways amidst misty mountains, head to the hill country between December and April when temperatures can range from 18°C to 25°C (though it can get hotter). It’s the ideal time to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, tour verdant tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya and go trekking in the Horton Plains National Park. In Sri Lanka, vacations in this part of the country let you truly experience a rich natural heritage.
East Coast and the North
Unlike the south and west coasts, the east coast and northern parts of the country experience their best weather from May to September. Sublime sunshine awaits along pristine shores at places like Pasikuda Beach and Nilaveli Beach, while Arugam Bay with its amazing waves draws surfers from around the world. This is also a great period to explore the Jaffna Peninsula, home to colonial-era buildings and religious sites like the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil.
What to Pack for Your Trip
Sri Lanka’s tropical climate calls for light, breathable clothing made from cotton or linen. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, sandals or comfy sneakers, sunscreen, and a hat. If you are planning a trip to the hill country, bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Also remember, when visiting religious sites, it’s respectful to cover your shoulders and knees. Pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
